The initial art was much more similar to those, and it slowly developed into a more mature style. Still, the anime takes it to a much more generic style.

今のところ良い評価を与えていいだろ。原作の4話が失われたのは大きな損失だけど、別のエピソードに移されただけだと思いたい。こんな早くから主人公が私立受験に失敗したというフラッシュバックが追加されてたのは、アニメのペース配分の観点からも理にかなってる。
I rate it good/10 so far, losing chapter 4 is a big loss, but hopefully it’s just getting moved to a different episode. Adding a flashback to Kyo not getting in private school this early makes sense for the perspective of anime pacing.

The whole point is that Ichi’s whole serial killer bit was just cope- he’s a loner who’s afraid to talk to people but has somewhat edgy interests so he explains away him being a loner by thinking of himself that way. Then he starts crushing on Yamada and interprets these feelings he’s never experienced before through that same framing.
