Why do the Japanese treat their Emperors like Muslims treat Muhammed?
It isn’t just their negative depiction that is forbidden, but their media depiction in general. I don’t remember any anime or manga or even doujinshi featuring Japanese Emperors or the royal family.
Shoguns? Depict them as cute little mo**stable shotas. But Emperors? Even depicting them as cool leaders is not ok.

実際、かつては天皇や皇族に対する不敬行為は処罰の対象となる法律があって、それが廃止されたのは第2次世界大戦後のことだ。だがある雑誌が、登場人物が皇族の斬首を夢見るという短編小説を掲載してとんでもない騒ぎになる事件があった。結局、謝罪が不十分だったことに腹を立てた一人が、その雑誌社の社長宅に押し入り、妻を刺し、家政婦を殺した。政治家たちはこの件で「天皇に失礼なことをしてはいけない」という法律を復活させようと議論し始めたが、出版社が二度とそのようなものを掲載しないと誓約することで一件落着した。
そういうワケで天皇の描写は今日ではタブーになっている。だからこのシリーズが後醍醐天皇を否定的に描いているのは、若干危ない橋をわたってる。後醍醐の失敗を多少誇張する程度で、史実に忠実に描いているから多分許されるんだろう。
It actually did use to be a law that any act of disrespect towards the Emperor or Imperial Family was a punishable crime, which only got abolished post-WW2. But after that, there was an incident where a magazine published a short story where a character dreamed about beheading the Imperial Family, which caused a ton of seething. Eventually, one person got so mad that they didn’t apologize hard enough that he broke into the magazine’s president’s home and stabbed his wife and killed the maid. Politicians start debating about bringing back the “no disrespect towards Emperor” law because of this, but then they agreed not to if publications promised to self-police to never release anything like that again.
So these days it’s just a taboo. The fact that this series even shows the Emperor negatively like in >>269251853 is treading a thin line. Likely they can get away because they’re generally sticking to historical facts of Go-Daigo’s failures with a slight exaggeration of it.

2021年の平家物語は、天皇やその家族を描くことに何の問題もなかった。この物語の中心人物である天皇や皇族を登場させなければ、この作品を描くのは難しいだろう。
一般的に、歴史的な天皇であればあるほど(現代から離れれば離れるほど)安全になる。天皇はもはや神ではないから、彼らを描写するのは冒涜には当たらない。でも多分敬意をもって扱うのが良いアイデアだろう。
Heike Monogatari from 2021 had no problem depicting the emperor or his family. Would be kind of hard to do this story if you didn’t show them because they’re central characters to it.
In general, the more historical an emperor is (removed from the current monarch) the safer it is to depict them. They are no longer divine so it’s not sacrilegious to depict them. It’s probably a good idea to be respectful, though. Depicting a modern emperor, though, would be disrespectful, I think.

It’s bonkers how the imperial court would just randomly decide to change the era name at any time. And this was the official dating system for the country for 2000 years. Actually it still is, technically, but at least since the Meiji era they only change the era name when a new emperor takes the throne so it’s less erratic.

CG使用は残念だけどみんな予想してたことだ。馬と犬について文句は言わないよ。制作は仕事をやり遂げた。ただ貞宗のCGモデルは画面に映るたびに悪目立ちしてた。時行のモデルは良かったしうまく全体に溶け込んでいた。ほとんどの場面で、画面に映ってる時行がCGなのか2Dなのかわからなかった。
Having them use cgi is disappointing, but is what many people expected. For the horses and dogs I won’t complain. They got the job done. Sadamune’s model stood out to every time it was on screen. Tokiyuki’s model was good and blended in well. Most of the time, I couldn’t tell if the Tokiyuki on screen was CGI or 2D.

だから、このエピソードでCGを使うことに何の抵抗もないよ。制作は十分うまく活用した。
As someone who is eagerly awaiting Steel Ball Run and has watched many of xForts videos on the subject, I now know the amount of difficulty that would go into animating Part 7.
So I have no qualms with the use of CGI in this episode. They used it well enough.

I always wonder how it is to search up some of our more obscure memes and stuff for explanations.
A lot of it isn’t recorded anywhere so you’d have to lurk or find archives to get any good explainers a lot of the time.
I also wonder how some of them translate into Japanese, but I have no opportunity to post them in a relevant thread so that they show up.
