it was my nagai gateway manga.
i still think it’s one of his best works.

コマ割りが素晴らしい。テンポは速いんだけど同時に永井が伝えたいことは全て伝えきったって感じがする
The paneling is astounding, the pace feels quick but it also feels like Nagai communicated everything that needed to be said at the same time.

I enjoyed how they dealt with how Ryo and Akira became friends when they were little and didn’t leave it to backstory.

みんな◯されたんだよ、アノン。そして最後のページは、さらに多くのことを示唆している。(ゲーテの『ファウストII』にも、神の意志の必然性(もしくは自然的決定論の必然性)という似たようなテーマがある）。実際、デビルマン後半にはファウスト的なテーマがたくさんあって、永井がこの作品からインスピレーションを受けたと言っても驚かないレベル)。

EVERYBODY got sl◯◯ghtered, anon. And the final page implies so much more. (Goethe’s Faust II has a similar motive of the inevitability of divine will – or inevitability of natural determinism, if you take the metaphor away. In fact, Devilman has lots of Faustian motives in its latter half, to the point where I’d not be surprised if Nagai came out and said he was inspired by it.)

そうすごいじゃないよ。日本人は外国文化を吸収して、自分たちの考えに取り入れるのを好む。世界のあらゆる国の芸術家もそうだ。黒澤明が「隠し砦の三悪人」を作る時にシェイクスピアにインスパイアを受けたように、ジョージ・ルーカスが「スターウォーズ」を作るときに今度は黒澤からインスパイアされたように、驚くような話でもない。
Not that incredible. The Japanese like to soak up foreign culture and incorporate it in their own ideas. As do artists everywhere in the world. It’s not surprising that Akira Kurosawa was “inspired” by Shakespeare when he made The Hidden Fortress, and then George Lucas was in turn “inspired” by Kurosawa when he made Star Wars.
