You could read Scott McCloud’s books on understanding comics. It’s the same as when you see realistic fish drawn in anime or manga. If it gets too real, your brain reduces it to an object. If it gets stylized, or in this case a dumb seiyuu saying “wan wan”, it becomes a person.

One interesting thing this anime made me think about is how the gods portrayed here (if they are similar to Japanese gods) aren’t exactly all powerful even in the area they specialize in. Only knowing Western religions all my life when I started watching I figured Sakuna could just wave her hoe around and the land would immediately till itself and the rice float into the right spots, but both Sakuna and Kokorowa have to actually work toward their goals and perform real, honest labor to achieve their “Godly” deeds

信じられないほど原作に忠実な部分もあれば、そうではないとこもある。でも魂がこもったアニメ化であることは間違いない。たとえアニメの選択に同意できないとこがあったとしても、ゲームのストーリーを一番よく見せるためにやっているのだといつも思える。
例えば、アニメではあからさまに人間たちがメインの田んぼの手伝いもしてるけど、ゲームでそういう描写は全くなかった。
ゲームだとサクナ以外のキャラがずっと座りっぱなしでも問題にならないけど、アニメでそれをやると酷い絵面になるから妥当な判断だ
It’s incredibly faithful in some parts and not in others, it’s a pretty funny adaptation. But it’s definitely extremely soulful, even if I disagree with some of their choices, I always feel like they’re doing it to showcase the game’s story the best.
Like, it clearly has the filthy, dirty ningen helping with the main rice paddy, which never happens in the game (lest they taint the rice with their disgusting mortality).
It makes sense because game characters sitting in their shop all day is fine, but in the anime it’d been terrible.

最近原作をプレイしたけど、これまで触れてきた中でも最高に魅力のあるゲームだよ。ゲームのすべてを楽しめた。唯一の欠点は、田んぼで労働するときのちょっとしたデザインの選択くらいで、あれはちょっと快適に操作できるような修正が必要だったと思う。
アニメもいつか必ず見るつもり。でもそれよりいつかゲームでサクナ2を作ってほしい。ほんと素晴らしいゲームだったから続編出さないとダメだよ
I played the game recently and it’s one of the most charming games I’ve ever played. I pretty much enjoyed everything about the game, only downside was some minor design choices for working in the field that could use some minor QoL fixes.
I’m definitely going to check out the anime at some point. But I do hope that the company will make a Sakuna 2 at some point. This was such a great game and it deserves a sequel.

Most of the episodes I see them complaining about people wasting food in western films. Western dude is eating a hotdog, someone comes up with an emergency, half-eaten hotdog is thrown away as he leaves in a hurry. This upsets them. In contrast Japanese dude if eating a onigiri, someone comes with an emergency, he stuff the rest in the mouth and leave in a hurry.
