they get funding for the project, but not a substantial cut from the revenues, they do all the legwork and get thrown a bone or two until they get another project dumped on them by some production committee.

If political ecelebs can live on a comfy 90k a year via patreon I don’t see why a beloved manga artist can’t.
the problem of course would be publishing your stuff, since chances are you don’t own your IP anymore if it got popular on Shueisha and the likes, they wouldn’t want to become a platform for artists to get famous and then ditch them.
