It was the same in the manga iirc. The gravestone in the first chapter and the resignation letters had japanese text, but I think that was just for the reader’s convenience and it mostly stuck to fantasy text later on.

フィンランド語の字幕もすごく堅苦しくて、翻訳者はフィンランド語が母国語じゃないか、実際の映像を見ずに台本から翻訳してるかだと思う。ファンタジーの世界観に詳しくないのは間違いない。
フィンランド語では”Loistavaa taikuutta”って訳されてるんだけどこれは、「優れた魔法」って意味。
だけど本来の意味は「閃光魔法」だった。これじゃまるでパーティがマルシルの魔法を褒めてるみたいだよ。
翻訳者はspellとmagicとmanaの区別さえついてないから、視聴者はアニメを観る前にまず漫画を読んでいないと、字幕が何を意味しているのかを追うのはかなり難しいぞ。
The finnish subs are very stiff and the translator doesnt seem to either be native finnish speaker OR he is translating from the script without seeing the actual media and he’s definitely not familiar with fantasy setting. In finnish it was

which would normally mean

but literally translates to
>Shining magic
so it seemed as if the party was congratulating Marcille for doing the spell
The translator doesnt even make difference between spell, magic and mana so it’s pretty hard to follow what the characters mean if one hasnt read the manga first before watching

I had the Spanish subs on by mistake last episode and the translator used the word for “spectre” when talking about the footsteps of ghouls. Absolutely moronic.

俺の理解だと、少なくとも字幕の翻訳者は、映像を見てるわけでなく、台本を渡されているから、何が起こっているのかが分からなくて、推測するしかないんだ。特に日本語は文脈への依存度が大きいからさらに酷いことになる。

my understanding is that translators, at least the ones for subtitles, don’t watch the show but are given a script so they have no idea of what is going on and have to guess, which is especially bad for a language like Japanese that’s heavily context dependent.
Still, the english subs do a good job so I don’t know if that’s the issue or the other translators are just bad. It would unironically be better if they translated from the english subs instead of the original japanese.
