The fanbook explained it better. Basically she had a bad morning sickness spell and Tsukasa helped her. She was a huge skating otaku and helped fund his career in secret until Kago found out and they BOTH funded it in “secret” and he worked part time doing odd jobs at Kago’s company until he graduated and started working legit while being a live-in assistant especially when Meiko fell. When Meiko died, Yoh started having mental breaks and mentally going back to infancy and Kago’s company(a general handy works company apparently) was going through a rough period and Tsukasa pretty helped weather the storm. Tsukasa is basically incapable of grasping that him being there was a bigger f**king deal than whatever financial impact skating had.

The reveal that Meiko pretended to randomly bump into Tsukasa again before officially taking him in hurt in a way I wasn’t ready for. Inori might be the rising star to root for but I’m glad it was made clear that this is still very much Tsukasa’s story too and that the dude is just as worthy of love.

After having heard his story, I’m now understanding why Tsukasa had put his hand on the wall after Inori’s question about his past: he’d been thinking about his failure to deliver results before Meiko’s death.
It must’ve been an incredible relief to Tsukasa, judging from those tears, to know that Meiko was just happy to support his efforts. That really tugged on my heartstrings!

A break in the action on the ice doesn’t mean a break from the drama and emotional impact with this show, and d*mn, I love it for that. Hearing Tsukasa’s story and how guilty he felt that he “betrayed” Meiko’s expectations (when that was really never the case at all in her eyes) was heart-wrenching, but I’m glad his talk with the family really cheered him up.

I have a feeling that Tsukasa’s perception of himself as undeserving of kindness stems from his experiences in skating. His aspirations were criticized by everyone around him, leading him to internalize those criticisms and blame himself for starting late. The combination has resulted in a low sense of self-esteem and a deficit in self-compassion, and it’s almost surprising that he can rein it in for Inori and doesn’t regard himself as unworthy of being her coach.

We initially got invested in this story for Inori, but Tsukasa is clearly a big piece of this story as well. Honestly, this makes for an outstanding family anime. 面白い豆知識：構想段階では羊といのりのダブル主人公になる予定だったけど、最終的に羊じゃなくて司になった。個人的には司が主人公の方がいいとは思うけど、羊を主人公にしてたらどうなったのかいつも気になる！
Fun little tidbit, originally Yoh (Kago’s daughter) was going to be dual main character with Inori, though eventually it was changed to Tsukasa instead. As much as I think having Tsukasa is very likely the better move, I’m always curious what it would’ve looked like with Yoh as a main character!
