I think thats highly debatable, its all about what kind of villain fits the story they´re in the best, some stories benefit more from pure evil, some others make tragic villains shine more.

I generally like either but I’m just so sick of pretentious douche bags who misinterpreted watchmen and then go on about that “a good villain is the hero of their own story” bullshit. Which is retarded. A good villain only needs to serve as an obstacle and foil to the hero. I am so sick of charisma voids who just think having a goal and a tragic backstory is enough.
