Bittersweet endings are only worth shit if the tragic aspect was unavoidable and counterbalanced by the heroes striving to make the best of it regardless.
“I can reverse the death of the universe and teach humanity how to become demigods, but my wife has to die on the altar because ‘muh next generation’” is arbitrary and nihilistic and cannot be argued as anything but.

An ending where the protagonist fades into obscurity and lose touch with their friends leaves a bitter sweet taste in my mouth that I don’t really like.

She was being kept “existing” by antispiral space magic. Antispirals were all kept in cages and had a “representative” being projected to interface with spirals and talk to them about the perils of gett- I mean, spiral energy… Nia was just one of those interfaces, a soulless AI until Simon’s affection made her actually aware of her own individualness.
Killing the antispiral representative was akin to turning off the computer emulating her.

TTGL(天元突破グレンラガン)は美しい作品。俺がアニメで好きなことのひとつ、アニメがときどき見せてくれるる痛々しくてひりつくような真摯な気持ちを完璧に捉えているんだ。日本人も私たちと同じようにひねくれ者だと思うので、こういう作品を見ると、彼らも私と同じように真摯さを求めているんだと感じる。人生から距離を置くのではなく、人生に没頭したいという思いがあるんだろう。シモンの痛みや苦しみを受け入れて、とにかく前進し、さらに掘り下げていこうとする姿勢は自分が体現したいと思う理想だ

TTGL is a beautiful series. It perfectly captures one thing I’ve always loved about anime, is that painful, cringy sincerity it sometimes manifests. We know the Japanese themselves are about as cynical as we are, so when I watch stuff like this, I feel that they have the same yearning for sincerity that I do. There’s a desire to get stuck into life rather than constantly distancing ourselves from it. Simon’s willingness to embrace pain and suffering, and soldier on anyway, digging ever further, is an ideal I wish I could embody.

I rewatch it every two years or so. Not quite a 10/10 for me anymore but nothing really is when you get jaded like I am.

A lot of people in this thread forget that a key concept to the Japanese is one of impermanence. The temptation to create an immortal empire for Humanity is just as great as wishing to defeat death, but both would have gotten Simon in trouble later down the road. If Humans kept abusing Spiral Energy, they’d destroy everything. It is natural and proper for things to die, for power to have limits, for there to be a time to plant and a time to harvest. Simon’s acceptance of this impermanence is considered a virtue. Very much a “refuse to play God” situation.
