Yes! I first discovered these movies by watching one that was playing on tv late one night when I was about 14- it was called ‘spirited away’ and it fucking blew my mind.
Almost 20 years later and I still love all the movies from the studio, enough that I have a few tattoos.

Look up Japonisme. It was an art trend spanning about 1850 to 1900 in Europe where western artists and curators became obsessed with Japanese art- especially Japanese woodcut prints by famous artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige.
You can see a tremendous amount of the influence in artists like Degas, Van Gogh, Klimt and Monet. It’s in the clever use of large areas of color and “flat” patterning and geometric forms, and a move towards abstraction away from classical realism.

Toyota deserves all the credit in the world for some amazing utilitarian vehicles like the Hilux and Land Cruiser. 戦後日本において、アメリカは協定の一環として軍事基地を設置した。基地に駐留する兵士たちが音楽を聴けるようにと色々輸送されたんだけど、その音楽は（当時の流行である）ジャズが多かった。持ち込まれたレコードは、その後日本全国の中古市場に流れたんだ。
その結果として、現代のJPopを聴けば、ジャズやブルースの音階・コード進行が、作曲の中に、かなり強く表れていることに気づくだろう。50年代、60年代に中古のジャズレコードを聴いていた若者たちは、70・80年代のシティポップの制作者になる年齢層だったんだ。
シティポップは、社会的テーマの影響、外の音楽スタイルの影響、斬新な技術的進歩の影響という3つの要素を完璧に兼ね備えていた
Fun tidbit for you:
In postwar Japan, the US established military bases as part of the accords. Soldiers stationed at the bases got music shipped in to listen to, which was a lot of jazz (as was the style at the time). As they outgrew the records they brought in, the old music trickled out into the rest of country in a second hand market.
Subsequently, if you listen to modern JPop, you’ll notice that jazz and blues scales, along with chord progressions, are far more predominant in music composition than you’re used to. Young people in the 50’s and 60’s who listened to the second hand jazz records were at the age point to be in production positions for city pop in the 70’s and 80’s… and the same way we have these 25-year cycles in the west, there’s been a cascade of music influence dating back to that postwar jazz.
City pop was the perfect trifecta of social thematic influence, outside musical style influence, and novel technological advancement influence.
